Presenting

I rather enjoyed the presenting task as it is something i feel comes to me easier than drawing and research. With the presenting task Kaye gave us a presentation about the Do's and don'ts of presenting which i found rather interesting. I liked working as a team, i feel like we worked together well. Each of us gave an input as too what to put in to the presentation and we all had a say.

I liked the question "Why is A better than B?" because you can expand on the question and the fact that it does not have a straight forward answer so you can be rather creative with the answer.

I personally felt like the presentation as a whole went well and my individual part was good as i received positive feedback form both Kaye and other class mates.  I recieved a comment that i should be a TV presenter which was great too hear as that is a career ive had a interest in before advertiisng. i was told i came across as confident, however, i was actually shakeing. I enjoy presenting if i have rehearsed and know what i am going to both say and do, even when confident i will still shake.

I am more aware of my accent now and that is something i hope to tone down for further presentation and not too rush my words if i become overly enthusiastic.

Reflection of the philips lightbulb task

This was our first advertising project and i was rather excited, then i turned stressed. I again struggled with researching but after my tutorial with Neil i feel like i could research better now than what i did for this task. It was hard to come up with 25 thumbnails that could realistically be used as an advert, i know now i need to really take an idea and expand it to its full potential.

Also i learned to to see an idea from a on lookers perspective. I knew the brief therefore my idea would make sense to me but i need to have the right text, information and visual so it makes sense to on lookers who have not seen the brief.

Working with a partner i have learned that good communication is important. We kind of separated for a bit then re-joined. I hope to improve my communication skills when working with someone in future. I also hope to improve my drawing and computer skills.

Our first Brief- The creative carrier

This was my first brief so was unsure as too how to go about it at first. I've never been strong with research and i'm not great with creating 3D models, drawing, sculpting and stuff so i tried to keep it both simple, practical and creative which is why i went with the Moving Box idea. I could put everything in to that box, show my work easily and it is something no one else in the class came up with so i believe was fairly creative. I admit my work did not look professional and i did not really do any rehersal before presenting my work but i did have fun even if it was a tad stressful. I learnt a fair amount doing this project and what to expect further on.

Hovis Television advert

Hovis advert - motion advert < click here for video of advert

This advert uses a young typical looking man going about his routine. It shows the process of him making his sandwich, you see his hungry expression showing he is looking forward to the meal. The viewer can see close ups of him buttering the bread,  and the bacon being cooked and sizziling. This would hopefully get the viewer a little hungry themselves, and what would be the first food they think of after seeing the advert and becoming rather peckish- Hovis bread.

The advert is rather bright, lighting does effect the advert because if its dull and dark it would create a more negative effect. Whereas a bright and light advert creates a more positive feel to it.

There are a lot of close ups used and it has a good few edits through out the short advert, but this keeps the viewer interested as one long shot could drag on. Although edits and close ups are used a lot, it is still clear what is going on during the advert.

They have made this advert very "english". From the person used to the tomato ketchup. Like bacon sandwiches tomato ketchup is a very english condiment. Similar to the print based advert you get a visual of the sandwiches looking like a Union Jack which is a strong English visual.

There is not a voice over until the end of the advert which allows the tag line to stick. The line also sounds like a traditional Englishman, again in keeping with the english feel. Also because there are just background noises throughout the advert until the end the visual more evident. Also the noises of the bacon sizzling would heighten the feeling of becoming hungry yourself.

All in all i believe the advert was well done and would have been a successful advert for the Hovis bread.

Analysis Hovis Advert

The Print based Hovis advert < click here for link to image

I found this advert rather clever in the way they made the sandwiches appear like the Union Jack. This advert has quite a patriotic feel to it with the shape of the sandwiches, the line "Made from 100% British Wheat" and using bacon sandwiches. Bacon sandwiches are more english than say prawn and mayo. The colours are all warm and in keeping with a colour scheme. This advert reminds me of the war times. The fact that it is on a old wooden table, the brown colours and the patriotic feel of the advert - a time when we all were very proud to be British.

The headline is in a nice neutral colour on a dark background making it easy to understand also stand out. It is a good size but does not dominate the advert as a whole. The image is also a good size and the sandwiches do look rather tasty.

At the bottom is the Hovis logo that actually looks like a loaf of bread. The yellow where the tagline "AS GOOD AS IT'S ALWAYS BEEN" really stands out still goes with the advert as a whole. The tagline also talks about time again giving the war time feel. That Hovis has been making good loafs of bread even in the times at war.

All in all i think that the advert is well done, clever and layed out well. I believe it has a warm feel to it and would have been a good success. :)

the lightbulb brief

With this brief me and a partner had to design a 48 page spread advert promoting the philips LED 25 Year lightbulb. The first part was the research task. We had on the lightbulb itself, the benefits, the features also if it has a USP. Also as part of the research task we looked in to the philips company itself as well as other competitors.

The person i was working with on this project was Rebecca Waddington. Together we had to come up with 25 separate thumbnails that we could use and later on develop. We actually came up with a couple more than the asked 25 and some we felt could really use.

Following  that i developed 5 of the thumbnails in to bigger designs, thinking where id put the text and if the visuals would look right.

After these had been drawn up i showed the 25 thumbnails to Kaye who explained what was right and what was wrong about each visual. After she looked through them i went off to think what else i could come up with. She said that the visuals were fine but the text needed improving, the tagline. The adverts werent necessarily clear. i came up with another advert that didnt work then me and Rebecca sat down and discussed adverts we liked. Neil looked through our work and gave us feedback. Both Kayes and Neils feedback helped us in to the direction for our finished advert.

when we discussed which ones we liked best we then looked at how we could develop these in to final ads. We discussed things like where the logo and text could go, if we could improve slogans and visuals. We done this with about five adverts. we drew these up seperatley in order to clear see how the advert would  turn out.

After this neil had a look at the final five and his feedback helped up with our final design which recieved good feed back from both the class and Kaye and Neil.

Although i struggled a bit with this brief it gave me a better understanding how the industry works. I learnt that research is vital in creating adverts and too be able to give myself constructive criticism. i also learnt some good techniques for scamping ideas and drawing techniques with this brief.
